Chapter Seventeen

Daniel

I shouldn’t be looking at it. Without thought, I turned away, and read through another book on the history of dragons. Most of it was rubbish, but a spell had worked its way into the edges. It was also worthless, a potion and incantation combo to help with hemorrhoids. But it kept me from glancing back to…

Damn it, I looked again.

Holding the book in my hands, I rose. After scouring every potential tome claiming to be real magic, I thought I’d found the answer. We had the angel feathers. Layla wore my bone around her neck. The unicorn might be a problem, but the incubus could withstand a goring or two. All that remained was the demon blood, and I’d finally found a way to open a tear to hell and retrieve it.

“Has anyone got a spare trash bag?” Layla shouted, her cheeks spotted with dust.

The only problem was that I could never tell her about it.

“Here,” that quiet one said. She’d seemed less reserved the past few days, almost smiling on occasion. After handing it over, Maram turned, not to follow Layla. No, her eyes landed right on me and I froze, dropping the book back to the table. She blinked slowly, then returned to mopping.

What am I thinking? Of course she can’t see me. She’s human.

Abandoning my books, I watched the only one who could see me stack a pile of milk crates. She wore the same overalls that cut off at her upper thighs, but this time with a crop top with a deep V-neck. Her hair was hidden below a kerchief, completing her mind-numbingly sexy farmer look.

What I wouldn’t give to find a hay bale to pull her behind.

“Layla?” I whispered beside her.

She began to hum and put an earbud in to pretend to listen to music.

“Ye-es!” she sang, then looked to me.

I couldn’t tell her. If I told her then she’d know and the whole problem would be on her. No. It was best to keep it to myself.

“Is it about a werewolf?” she sang when I didn’t respond.

I frowned and stared out through the open door. He’d stripped off his shirt in order to show off every damn muscle while carrying firewood. Instead of begging for forgiveness from me or the angel, or even Layla, he’d just gone back to work as if nothing happened.

“No,” I said.

“Or the angel?”

Garavel was busy with his kitten and seemed to have shrugged off the wolf’s verbal barrage without a care. I shook my head.

“Then what?” Layla’s singing was straining and she glared.

“What’s that song?”

We both went wide-eyed and turned to the curious Maram. “What about the angel?” she sang before blanching. “Or was it the werewolf?”

“It’s a…a demo. Friend of mine’s in a band. He doesn’t want anyone else to listen to it until it’s done. Sorry.”

She nodded to Layla’s lie. “Okay. Well, when it’s finished.”

“I’ll be sure to give Fariah a download link,” Layla said with a big smile. “I, uh…need to get more crates for crate things.
